23 May - New Member Regatta a Family Affair

The 2010 New Member Regatta is always a great deal of fun but with 12 knots of breeze on a cool, overcast day we all wondered - smiles or frowns? Well, in our hearts we probably knew that our hardy Flying Scot fleet would treat our new members to a great day on the water. Sure, we had a good breeze and a bit of damp, but that was nothing compared to the smiles, laughs and good times had while we had three, quick fun races to introduce folks -new and prospective - to what we do best at SSYC - sail small boats. A wonderful spread, coffee, awards all around, and the day was complete. A big shout out to Ainsley VanWinkle-Hilfiker for organizing, PRO Leighton Waters, Doug Milnes for rallying the Scot fleet and all the Scot sailors and members who volunteered on and off the water. It was great afternoon and the start of a great season. Welcome to all!

13 May - Hoist Painting Project to Wrap by June 4

rust bucketIf you've recently checked out the club's electrical hoists you'll see all three are victims of the ravages of the club's marine climate. This condition is about to be resolved and should be completed before the beginning of the Championship Series. No, yellow was ruled out, and the day-glo colors were rejected, but we thing you'll be happy with the results - so thanks, Dan!

08 May - SSYC Spring Laser Regatta Blows Them Away

Race 5 - StartThis year's spring Laser Regatta had it all - from 5 knots to 25 knots - and through it all our fleet of intrepid sailors left it all on the course. With the weather expected to worsen, PRO Clauss raced five back to back races, making for a challenging day in the boat. And as the breeze freshened, a very competitive fleet began to feel the effects of a long winter's nap. In the end, all had a fantastic time, Fleet Captain Anita Waters and Mom Anita Waters put on a great spread, the Commodore spread some great cheer as he handed out awards and the competitors, though tired, had a good many smirks on their respective faces.

18 Apr - Spring Series Gets a Cold, Fast Start

Team DBW holds off Team Langado at the finishIt was spray gear and stocking cap weather but a good group of hardy sailors made the effort and were rewarded with a great day of sailing on the river. Four classes launched and the race committee did a bang up job of getting in some clean, quick jaunts around the buoys. Chair Kelly Zweig extends her thanks to PRO Doug Milnes and all the rescue boat teams for a fantastic job and wants to remind all sailors that wearing the right gear is critical - particularly for our younger sailors. Remember juniors (and seniors) - wet suits/dry suits and spray gear are a must! The Spring Series wraps on May 16.

17 Apr - Fireside Cocktails - Warming Things Up in Anticipation

3 Interesting CharactersWe have a fine season ahead and there's nothing like a cozy fire, fine food, good music and wonderful friends to start out the year. The Social King - Phil Arnheiter and his court put on a wonderful first event in the clubhouse. While the wind blew outside, the sound of halyards clanging, the smell of wood burning and the good cheer all around reminded us of why SSYC is such a special place. "The King" - no, not that King - although there is a similarity - wishes to send a big thanks out to Cathy Brinkman for her prep, along with Sue DeSantis, Mike Eager, Jeff Quinn, Lovely Ladies Keeping Warm FiresideWalter Burrell, Doug Milnes, PC Alan Schneider, Betty Rugg, our Commodore Mike Lyttle ahd his lovely wife Holly. Also a special thanks goes to Heidi Eberhard and her guest James (one name - like "The Rock") as well as the power behind the throne - Robin Arnheiter for bringing it all together in spectacular fashion.

20 Mar - Commodore's Reception was Hot, Hot, Hot!

It was a hot night - both outdoors and indoors, as Commodore Mike and Holly Lyttle hosted a fabulous soiree to kick off the season. Cocktails, a great buffet, good company and the cool sounds of the Thom White Band made it a great night out. Wow, who wouldn't want to sail with us when the Commodore's first instinct is to lead the conga line? Again, senior social chair Phil Arnheiter sends a big thank you out to Gail Van Winkle, Fred Beshore, Ainsley Van Winkle-Hilfker, Doug Milnes, Liz Gearon, Holly Lyttle and the lovely and charming Robin Arnheiter for all of their help in making the Commodore's Reception such an enjoyable evening!

SSYC Clubhouse No DocksChartered in 1936, our founders established the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club to bring together all who enjoy the simple pleasure of the actions of wind, water and sail. Shrewsbury is about its people, about the love of sailing and about the camaraderie that draws sailors together. We are a volunteer organization, run by members for our mutual benefit and for the betterment of the club and the sport of sailing. We work to encourage and preserve the arts of sailing and navigation, maintaining one of the top junior sailing programs in the northeast, and one that has produced many national and international champions. At the same time, we continue to promote a top-flight one-design racing program for both adults and children, sailing seven active fleets from April through October.
